What is included in a Personal Automobile Policy (PAP) in California?
Nationwide there are more than 21 million motor vehicle collisions per year. Another 2 million vehicles are stolen per year. Coverage within a PAP has been established to transfer the financial risk of both moving and isolated vehicle losses to an insurer. The insurer in return for owning the transfer of risk charges a fee.
There are approximately six important components to a PAP in California.
1.Bodily Injury (BI) - Should a person get injured in an auto accident and have Bodily Injury, the Bodily Injury (BI) liability protection is utilized. The driver at fault will be responsible for the medical costs of that injured person. Each policy has a limit on how much liability coverage is provided per individual in the accident. There is also a per occurrence BI coverage amount that caps out how much an insurance provider has to pay per accident.
2.Physical Damage (PD) – Should a vehicle or other physical property becomes damaged due to an accident, the PD liability protection is utilized. The driver at fault will be responsible for all vehicles and physical property damaged that occurred in the accident. The PD portion of a PAP includes one set amount of coverage for the whole incident. Should there be excess loss above the insured’s limits, the insured is held responsible financially for the remaining portion of the loss.
3.Uninsured or Underinsured Motorists (BI / PD) – In certain parts of Los Angeles California 7 out of 10 drivers do not have insurance. For the state of California a study showed that 28% of all drivers do not carry insurance coverage. While some insureds carry coverage, they don’t carry enough coverage for a particular accident’s losses. This portion of a PAP allows the insured to get coverage when the person at fault doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance coverage to cover all losses. This insurance is provided for BI and PD types of losses.
4.Collision – Insureds are required to have liability PD coverage for others but not their own property. Collision insurance is utilized when the insured receives damage to their own property. Collision insurance will restore their vehicle back to its original physical state. This insurance is utilized only when the damage has been created due to a moving collision.
5.Comprehensive – This type of physical damage coverage is utilized when a car is damaged due to anything Other Than a Collision. For example, a stolen car or if a tree has fallen on the car and caused damage, this type of insurance will cover the loss. This type of coverage is also known as Other Than Collision insurance.
6.Medical Payments Coverage – This insurance is optional. It pays reasonable medical expenses incurred by the insured, members of the insured’s family and passengers for bodily injuries sustained while riding in the insured’s vehicle.
